We’ve been sorting, sifting, consolidating, culling, photographing, writing descriptions, and listing all of Dean’s props, personal effects and equipment for Monday’s sale.

It's just days away, the estate sale for Dean Dill.

Dean Dill Estate on the Horizon

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of this week’s blog I have to show you a picture of my latest-and-greatest grandson, Clark, who stopped in to pay us a visit with his mommy. As you can see by the photo, his proud papa is showing how adept the young lad is at holding a magic wand. Apparently, the boy far exceeds his weeks – so talented!

Yes, we start them off early in this family and at Hocus Pocos – no waiting! No sense postponing the inevitable, get ’em hooked early!

Given the Honor to Oversee Dean’s Estate

Most recently, we were exceedingly honored to get the news that Hocus Pocus had been personally selected by the family of Dean Dill to offer his estate to the magic fraternity.

BW-Dean-Dill

Dean Dill, the consummate coin magician, practitioner and inventor.

In direct response this very distinct honor, Wednesday this week, Cole and I headed south for Glendale to meet up with Tim Mannix and the truck to begin the process of packing and loading the lion’s share of Dean’s Shop into a 17-foot truck for the trek back to Fresno.

Unless a novice to magic, most know Dean Dill was a magician and effects designer who lived and worked in Glendale, California and that his appearance of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson had spawned from a longtime association with Johnny acting as magic tutor and trusted friend.

Dean’s performances focused mostly on close-up effects, and he had a particular passion for and expertise in coin magic. He created and marketed a number of effects, including “Dean’s Box,” “Blizzard”, and “A New World”.

We started early, arriving at 7:00am to meet Denise Dill, who was on hand to oversee and assist us. Of course, as with most consignments, there is always far more to do than anticipated, but after several hours, we had practically emptied Dean’s shop and office of all his belongings, including the removal of his vast collection of autographed 8x10s of famous magicians that adorned the walls of his shop.

Dean’s Shoppe was frequented by many magicians over the years – famous and not-so-famous, but all were treated with the same respect.

Dean surrounded himself with hundreds of pictures of magician friends and many a card trick was performed in this kitchen over the years.

Before it was all over, Cole removed the famous sign from the building ‘s exterior.

Removing the sign was easier than we initially thought -- thanks Cole!

After nearly five and a half hours, we finally completed the task and had the truck expertly packed to the gills and ready for the return trip to Hocus Pocus. It was a long and tiring endeavor for a single day’s work.

Finally, back in Fresno. Now, it’s time to start unpacking and cataloging all of Dean’s items for the estate sale.

Scott Weston aka Cashetta Dies

An outrageously talented comic, singer, magician & psychic entertainer, Scott Weston aka “Cashetta” passed away suddenly March 16, 2015. He died in Puerto Vallarta Mexico while asleep of an apparent heart attack. He was 44..

Scott Weston as Cashetta, magician, mentalist & entertainer.

Scott Weston as Cashetta, magician, mentalist & entertainer.

Weston’s Cashetta was born in the late 1980s, and as a teenager, he and his friends “would dress up in the craziest and most artistic outfits we could put together with bits and pieces from craft stores and each other’s mother’s wardrobes.”

What began as a dance floor lark, emerged in the mid ’90’s as a professional pursuit. Cashetta would set herself apart a unique blend of cabaret and comedy.

But it was as a magician that Cashetta would make a mark in the business and lead to numerous television appearances that included stints on “The Today Show,” “Conan O’Brien” and the “Outlaugh Festival – Wisecrack” on Logo with Margaret Cho.

Talent aside, Weston was known for having one of the biggest hearts in the industry and was responsible for giving a leg up to many in the world of nightlife and entertainment.

Weston’s passing is mourned on social media by the scores of show business professionals with whom Cashetta shared a stage.

Once again, I am reminded that we have to love and appreciate them during the short time they are here with us.

As always, have yourself a great weekend.

Until next time,

Paul

A New Friend in Magic

Posted in Uncategorized on March 13, 2015 by hocuspoc

The weekend is suddenly upon us, so I’ll make this relatively quick.

A Bird, A Plane, It’s Super Zachary

This is just too darn cute not to post. My grandson Zachary was off to school this morning with his mighty Superman t-shirt and Superman curl courtesy of his dad. Once the designated curl was in place, a pose was struck and the incident was immediately captured on film for the rest of the world to enjoy via Facebook.

Rest assured that the world is safe with Super Zachary on duty.

He's ready for action!

We’re thankful that Zachary’s personal barber, Dad was on hand to attend to the hair curl — good Jonathan Bray. He’s ready for action!

Another Visitor from Afar

This week we were visited by Daniel Ka, a touring magician from Spain with his assistant girlfriend Lucia. Daniel is a 24-year-old magician that really seems to have the world by the tail. His act seems very polished and his zeal for our Art is palatable.

Daniel demonstrated several of his of his effects, including his Impossible Predictions, Linking Ropes and his Automatic Dove Bag among others. I have to say that his props are very professionally constructed with the highest grade of materials. I was VERY impressed. So much so that we are now carrying five of his items.

Spanish magician Daniel Ka is definitely someone to watch in

Take a look at the video for Daniel Ka’s Impossible Predictions.

Daniel is an award-winning magician and devised his clever dove bags and harnesses all while building his award-winning act.

When we saw the craftsmanship and thinking behind Daniel’s Automatic Dove Bag, we knew instantly that we had to carry them. We knew that our dove-working customers would appreciate them. If you work with doves, be sure to check them out.

With Daniel’s harness you can instantly produce a dove without the need of a SILK to hide the steal.  You can produce a dove out of a pair of gloves, on a cane, in a balloon, or you can split a dove into two, all while leaving the dove perfectly comfortable in the harness without fear of any harm to the animal.

After a quick visit to Yosemite, Daniel and his gal pal were headed north from here for another lecture in San Francisco, then onward to Mill Valley for shows at the Throckmorton Theater and finally to Las Vegas to perform in Jeff McBride’s WonderGround.

The WONDERGROUND was created as a place to bring the community of magic and variety together for an extraordinary experience in co-created art and play. The third Thursday of every month artists, magicians, variety performers, dancers, painters, musicians, multi-media artists and poets come together to celebrate and create an experience.

We’re always happy to see visiting and touring magicians. Stop in if you’re passing through Fresno.

We Going to a Magic Show

After dinner tonight, Betty and I along with friends Joe & Elaine will be attending a performance of the Fresno Magic Club being held at a local church. Our own Tim Mannix will be the closer of the show, so we’re excited to support the Arts and our fellow magicians this evening.

It's show time everybody! We'll be cheering the Fresno Magic Club on tonight.

What with Spring coming earlier than expected, I’ll be working in the garden all weekend getting it prepped for the season.

Until next time,

Going Totally Gonzo!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 6, 2015 by hocuspoc

Before I tell how nuts people have gone for one of our latest offerings, I got to tell you about my grandson Zachary’s recent birthday party because he really went gonzo during his first trip to Chucky Cheese’s.

Zachary’s 4th Birthday

Last weekend I had the distinct pleasure of attending Zachary Bray’s fourth birthday party which was held at one of our local Chuck E. Cheese’s. it was a superman theme party. We had Superman everything; cake, tablecloth, napkins. The love and affinity towards Superman is now firmly established as a Gross family tradition — all males will surely be indoctrinated into this subset of American society.

Zachary-4th-Party

Happy birthday to Zachary with a mega cake and a super hero mask. What could be better?

The kid went especially nuts, when it was time to put him into the special Chuck E. Cheese’s Prize Grabber Booth.  At first, Zachary didn’t quite grasp the whole idea of this strange endeavor, but when the blower turned on and prize tickets and certificates started flying about he quickly caught on.

The birthday child has 60 seconds to grab as many of the flying tickets as possible with the hopes of a major windfall that can be cashed in for a bevy of prizes (trinkets) courtesy of Chuck E. Cheese.

Based on Zachary’s first encounter, I’m thinking we’ll be back at Chucky’s place real soon.

Betty and I with our Super Man grandson Zachary. I’m telling you the boy was wound up and happy as can be.

After the prize-grabbing was completed, Zachary asked the attendant if he could do it again. He was ready to go for the GOLD! But even grandpa’s dissuading arguments didn’t stop him from continually asking the girl for one more shot at MORE major kid-cash and prizes.

Sadly, his efforts proved to be futile, but there’s always another chance NEXT year!

We were all amazed that he wore the Super Hero mask that they gave him all during the party. Zachary is definitely committed to the hero business. My daughter Renee, husband Jonathan and their good friends dressed in Super Hero t-shirts for the occasion. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern were represented.

I love my grandson. He makes me laugh!

Gonzo by Jose Lac Quest

We’ve gone Gonzo for GONZO and so have our customers. Early this week we sent an email out announcing the arrival of Jose Lac Quest’s newest effect called Gonzo. Well, people went nuts or GONZO! Within minutes I started getting orders and it didn’t stop. Had I had a bell on my computer it would’ve been ringing ALL day. It was incredible!

You really do have to watch the video to see how miraculous this effect comes off -- like REAL magic!

A wondrous, secret gimmick that enables you to spread your fingers wide open and show both sides of your hands completely empty. Roll up your sleeves to just below the elbow to show your bare forearms.

Spectators clearly see both sides of your hands and arms before and after each stunning effect. Everything happens in full view as you deliver miracle after miracle!

Gonzo Factoids

  • Vanishes happen in an instant
  • An object can be vanished and reappeared freely without reset
  • When done with the effect, your hands and arms can be examined
  • The weight of a double (AA) battery is the heaviest Bonzo can handle
  • The largest width of an object is the bottle cap as seen in the trailer. Slightly smaller JUMBO pennies work just fine
  • Reset is pretty much instant …super easy…takes literally no time for a vanish…for a production slightly more time

Deal Of The Day (5 Days)

Next week we’ll be offering FIVE separate and unique deals EACH day of the week. The discounts vary, but trust me when I say that each of the daily deals really is a good deal on something magicians will want.  But, there’s a catch, here it is….

Each Deal-of-the-Day is in fact unique in that there is a LIMITED supply of each item offered. We may have quantifies of thirty (30) of one trick, yet only ten (10) of another.

Limited-Time-Offer8

These daily deals automatically DISAPPEAR when supplies on hand are exhausted or the following morning promptly at 9:00am PST — whichever comes first! So once the supply is depleted you’re out of luck!

Now would be a good time to watch your email inbox for these forthcoming deals. And if not already a member, sign up!

Off to the Spring Home Show

HomeGardenShow2015

Betty and I will be attending the Spring Home Show this weekend at the fairgrounds. It always fun and gives us somewhere to go and we get to see all that’s new or interesting. I know we’ll have fun.

Hope your weekend is a good one too.

Until next time,

Paul
