The Hero’s Horse

Posted in Uncategorized on October 26, 2015 by hocuspoc

We recently traveled down south once again to pick up a most unusual and magnificent prop, the Hero’s Horse by Owen Magic Supreme. One of our customers is flying in this next Monday to personally have a private demonstration before he purchases it.

The Hero’s Horse is a very artistic and imposing piece that can be displayed in one’s home or office and no one would ever believe that it was actually a very sophisticated magic trick.

One of only SIX ever produced, this extraordinary prop commands a $25,000 price tag. Its inner workings and engineering are so complex and impressive that it’s a study in mastery and inventiveness. In fact, so clever is it, you’re actually tempted to divulge its secrets.

Rather than stumble through an explanation, let me allow our online description to paint a picture for you of what an onlooker experiences.

Hero’s Horse by Owen Magic Supreme

One of six ever made, Owen has recreated and embellished one of the Alexandrian “Temple Wonders” first described in a manuscript by Hero of Alexandria nearly 2000 years ago.

We are pleased to announce our new association with Owen Magic Supreme. Hocus Pocus will be representing an array of Owen high quality magic props and paraphernalia from their vast product line. Known worldwide for creating props and equipment for top working professionals, the Owen name is recognized as one that is synonymous with magic of the highest caliber.

Owen Magic’s James Olsen has recreated and embellished one of the Alexandrian “Temple Wonders” first described in a manuscript by Hero of Alexandria nearly 2000 years ago. A stunning golden statue of a horse stands atop an ebony and brass base.

Alexia Zagorsky of Owen Magic Supreme with the Hero's Horse and a stock photo (below).

(Above) Alexia Zagorsky of Owen Magic Supreme with the Hero’s Horse and a 1980’s stock photo (below).

Effect: The performer twice passes a solid steel sword through the horse’s neck from top to bottom, yet the horse’s head remains firmly attached.

Commenting that the horse may be thirsty after such an ordeal, the performer offers a glass of water, which the horse drinks down with a “slurp.” The glass is put down in a strategic spot, and after a moment, nature takes its course in an unexpected way. On the spectator’s command, the horse immediately stops what it is doing to conclude the presentation on an amusing note.

“Hero’s Horse” is both esthetically beautiful and mechanically remarkable. The liquid effects are accomplished in a historically appropriate manner, without springs, pumps or moving parts. This museum-quality piece is only one example of Owen Magic’s custom engineering and building capabilities.

The entire illusion stands 60 inches tall and is 36 inches across and 24 inches deep.

Included is a custom built ATA case for safe transport.

The Geometrick Illusion

Also, as he is a serious Owen Magic admirer, our client has strongly hinted that he may be purchasing the Geometrick Illusion as well. Needless to say, we are very enthusiastically anticipating a successful visit.

Acquired from a private collection, the Geometrick Illusion>, leads the field in a new generation of innovative stage illusions that are 100% angle-proof!

The cooler weather is a welcome change making yard work far more enjoyable. I’m planning on having a great weekend. Hope you do too.

Moretto Statue Comes; Big Fresno Fair Goes!

Posted in Uncategorized on October 16, 2015 by hocuspoc

Our friend, magician Louie Foxx has been in town along with several other magicians for the Big Fresno Fair. They’ll be finishing up this Sunday as the fair comes to a close. Ace Miles aka Capt’n Jack Spareribs and Dr. Solar (Terry Robinson) have returned for the fair. Each have paid us a visit and we are glad to see them once again.

For several years now, the specialty acts & performers featured at the Big Fresno Fair visit Valley Children’s Hospital here in north Fresno. As you can see, the kids really get a lift from this visit.

In Other News…

This week, we took in a remarkably unique art piece that is magic-related and definitely the only one of its kind. It’s Moretto statue of Richard Ross. Here’s the write on our site:

Moretto Statue, Richard Ross with Coin Set

Recently acquired from a collection, this unique work of art captures the essence and spirit of Richard Ross in magnificent detail.

No magician can think of The Linking Rings and not think of Richard Ross, and his perfect presentation of the classic. At a time when stage magicians were yearning for new illusions, Ross made his reputation by perfecting classics, and selflessly dedicating himself to helping young magicians.

Approximately a month before his untimely passing, he received a Performing Fellowship from the Academy of Magic Arts and Sciences, a last recognition for an incredible performer.

Richard Ross left behind a legacy of magic for an entire country, and will serve as he always did — as an inspiration to young magicians everywhere.

No magician can think of The Linking Rings and not think of Richard Ross, and his perfect presentation of the classic.

DESCRIPTION: Toni Moretto is an Italian artist who has been described as a “cartoonist sculptor” who creates “humorous ceramics”, and whose work can be seen in many contemporary museums. Moretto’s work perfectly reflects the innate humor or ridiculousness of his models, taken from everyday life, professions and scenes. One of the subject matters he depicts — is that of magicians.

Moretto’s genius comes in full light when he gets his inspiration from magicians. His true artistry shines through these clay magicians in the evocation of their faces, and the motion of their hands. Only Moretto has the ability to capture a magician’s look and gestures in clay, not to mention the slight irony of our profession.

This rare one-of-a-kind statue depicts Richard Ross with Veronique performing his singularly sensational linking ring routine, which made him a instantaneous household name in the magic world.

This exceptional stature has been coupled with a coin set from Ross’ 1970 FISM act. The coin set is #39 of 43 sets released and is beautifully framed with a photo of Richard Ross and an image of his Grand Prix trophy. The coin was actually used by Richard during his Grand Prix wining FISM act from 1970 and accompanies a Richard Ross token.

The statue itself is made from pure white clay that is oven-baked, meticulously painted, baked again, and finally varnished. The pieces that are released from Moretto’s workshop are not examples of craftsmanship, but rather PURE art. There is no mold. The characters are individually shaped by hand and each one is a unique piece, so no other exists.

Moretto never made two similar statues. This one-of-a-kind aspect makes them not only special, but truly rare!

Collectible art pieces of this magnitude tend to be few-and-far-between, so your quick action ensures ownership of this Richard Ross Statue by Moretto, so buy it TODAY to avoid potential regret!

Back to the Fair for Diana Ross Concert

Betty and I are off to see Diana Ross in concert tonight at the Big Fresno Fair. I hope it doesn’t rain. And yes, you read THAT correctly — rain in Fresno. It’s actually happening sporadically over the past two days.

Another Week of Intrigue

Posted in Uncategorized on October 1, 2015 by hocuspoc

We’ve been busy putting up items from a consignment this week. Some larger props as well as lots of books. And some of these props are quite intriguing to say the least. This mid-Century Thayer Vanishing Bird Cage made me want to consider it, but just for a moment. I have a really great one, so I don’t need it.

In fact, there are now over 770 books listed in our Private Estate section, so take a look because there are some fantastic books that we’ve not had on our site in over four years.

Here are just a few examples of items that went up:

Tim is Off to Paris!

Actually, it’s true. But, the accurate spelling is Perris. He’ll be going to Perris, California for the Southern California Fair to fill in for a few days for our friend, magician Frank Thurston.

Frank works the fair circuit nine month out of the year, mostly here in California, and has two overlapping fairs, so Tim will be filling in for him so that he can make both of these engagements. Plus, this will give Tim some exposure into the fair market since the last fair Tim worked was 35 years ago, the Oklahoma State Fair when in his first year of college.

The Rootin Tootin Fun starts this Saturday, October 3rd.

If you’re in the Riverside County area or somewhere in the Southern California area, you may want to stop in and see either Tim or Frank performing during the fair.

Adult tickets are $5 ($8 at the gate), children tickets (ages 5-11) are $3 ($4 at the gate).

Long Distance Card Trick

We just put this back up in limited supply and would suggest if you’ve ever been interested in it, you act now. I first saw Chris perform this routine live at Wizardz’s in Universal City several years ago and will never forget how funny this routine was. I knew we had to have it. Sadly, it became unavailable. However, it’s back now in limited supply.

“This routine slays them. I consistently perform this effect whenever humanly possible. It kills!” ─ Tim Mannix

“I can’t believe Chris Mitchell is marketing this routine. It’s the type of routine that I’m sure reads like nothing (or worse), but when you see Chris perform it, you instantly recognize it as a product of a working professional’s act. Many of you will probably think this is a bit pricey for what you’re getting, but you’re not paying for the props; you’re paying for a professional routine, perfected by years of actual performance. If you had hired Chris to write and direct this routine for you, you would have paid a lot more.” ─ John Lovick, MAGIC Magazine Review

LD-Card-Trick

EFFECT: A deck of cards bound with a rubber band, is shown to the audience. Place the deck in a bucket dangling at the end of a four foot pole.

The laughter starts as the pole surprisingly extends 15 feet into the audience. Four spectators, at various locations in the audience, each peak at their own card. Without looking at the deck, you are able to psychically and comedically name each person’s card.

This is a fabulous routine. Strong magic. Unbelievably funny. Comes with everything you need including the extendable pole, bucket, special deck a performance DVD with Chris’ full routine, written detailed instructions.

As always, have a great weekend my friends.

The 3 Amigos of Magic; A Report

Posted in Uncategorized on September 25, 2015 by hocuspoc

Mark Price, Tim Mannix and me teamed up to deliver the 3 Amigos of Magic once again at the Stars Dinner Theater in Bakersfield.

I was very happy that many people came out to support us including friends from Los Angeles. My cousin Lynne Santini from Redondo Beach even came to see the show. Alan Zagorsky (Owen Magic Supreme) and his wife Norma were there as well as our good customer and magician friend Danny Moreno.

I haven't seen my cousin Lynne in years. I'm so glad she came to see the show.

I haven’t seen my cousin Lynne in years. I’m so glad she came to see the show — all the way from Redondo Beach.

Roberto Cordova also was in attendance as well coming in for Porterville. Roberto recently purchased a Vanishing Dove Cage from us and will be using it in his one-man show. He performs in the mountains for campers and travelers of all kinds.

Doris and Les Cooper came in from West Los Angeles — AND — brought friends, for the SECOND time to enjoy our show. They were in attendance last year and had lots of nice things to say about our performances. Thanks Les & Doris for supporting the arts!

It was great to see you there.

It was great to see you there.

Also, I wish to thank by name several of the Fresno-area magicians, members of the Fresno Magic Club, that came out including Nate Delahay, Chris Reynoso and girlfriend (who I used for the Sword thru the Neck), Craig Grison from Chowchilla, and Alberto V. (aka Double AA Voltage).

The Show

The show went very well and our audience seemed to really enjoy our varied acts. Gus Flamingo (Mark Price) did his comedy card act, Tim performed some of his signature pieces including producing Max Factor the rabbit at the conclusion of his act and I performed the Hindu Basket as the finale to my act.

Mark performing is comedy card act for the people.

The Amazing Linda is giving me trouble during my dove act.

Paul-Gross-Onstage3

This botania is NOT working for me. I wonder if the Amazing Linda will be able to make it work?

Betty jokes that the first part of my act is a Owen Magic Dealer Demo since almost all of it is comprised of Owen props.

According to reliable sources, Alan kept saying, “That one’s mine!” and “That one’s mine too” all during my act, so what Betty says is true.

This Owen Magic Pitcher always does the trick -- literally!

Tim’s Long Distance Card Trick had Alan flummoxed and he kept asking about it for DAYS afterwards. It’s a modified comedy version of the Tossed-Out Deck that Chris Mitchell put out a few years ago. The telescoping pole is a visual that gets people laughing.

The classic baby gag helped Tim to get them laughing.

Alan just couldn’t seem to wrap his mind aro9udn how the Tossed-Out Deck worked. He remembered the audience members sitting down one-at-a-time, but that’s a tribute to how the mind works.

When Tim produces Max Factor the rabbit for his finale everyone loves it.

When Tim produces Max Factor the rabbit for his finale everyone loves it.

Other than a few flubbed music cues (welcome to the world of live theater) the show came of without a hitch and I think our little traveling magic act went over with a bang. It’s always a pleasure to perform and we are looking forward to the next time. We’ll keep you posted about our next engagement.

As always, have a great weekend my friends.

More news later,

Paul

P.S. Sorry we don’t have more pictures, but we’ll be more diligent about capturing the show next time.

The 3 Amigos Ride Again

Posted in Uncategorized on September 18, 2015 by hocuspoc

Finally, it here. Tomorrow night we, The 3 Amigos of Magic, once again take the stage at Stars Dinner Theater for a repeat performance.

The 3 Amigos of Magic include myself, Tim Mannix and Mark Price. Our fancy-schmancy bios are found below.

3-Amigos-Banner-2015-Sept-19th

The Comedy Magic Act of Paul Gross (Amigo) and the Amazing Linda

The comedy magic act of Paul Gross and Linda Davis began their performing career in High school, over 30 years ago. After an extended hiatus, they have teamed up once again at the insistence of friends, family and the magic community. Paul’s performances have been witnessed all over the United States for corporate shows, including one of the country’s largest banks, to theatres and more intimate settings.

Gross and Davis combine classic magic illusions and comedy to bring spectators a show unlike anything they’ve ever seen. Paul is also the proprietor of Hocus Pocus Magic, a family owned, Fresno-based online magic retailer that has been in business for nearly forty years.

The Amazing Linda may be in serious peril if this doesn't work out.

Magician Gus Flamingob (Amigo)

Mark Price’s alter ego, GUS FLAMINGO, has been performing his stylistically unique brand of comedy magic for over thirty years. A tour de force, Gus has attained a well-earned reputation for his quick wit and is considered by his peers to be an ad-lib genius.

Mark Price appears as Gus Flamingo, a flim-flam snake oil salesman of sorts.

Price is a seasoned performer who has racked up thousands of live performances at fairs, festivals, dinner theaters, comedy clubs and Las Vegas showrooms. A marvel with audience volunteers, Gus adds just the right blend of humor and good-natured fun to maximize the end result — laugh-out-loud comedy!”

This is not a caped crusader it is an escaped invader -- Gus Flamingo!

With years of audience-tested material under his belt, Gus delivers proven results.

Tim Mannix, Magician (Amigo)

A recent transplant to the Central Valley, Tim Mannix was formerly one of L.A.’s busiest variety arts entertainers with decades of experience.

In addition to being a frequent performer at Hollywood’s world famous Magic Castle, Mannix is also a three term past President of Hollywood Ring #21 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, a magic lecturer and a current contributor to VANISH magazine, a trade periodical for working professional magicians.

Tim Mannix makes a magician out of an audience volunteer during one of his performances at the Stars Dinner Theatre.

Billed as a comedy magician, Tim’s experience includes everything from adult performances at corporate gigs with his stand-up comedy magic act to tickling the funny bones of children all over California.

And they all lived happily ever after....or something like that.

And they all lived happily ever after….or something like that.

As one customer described it, “Tim’s show is like a Disney movie where the parents get to enjoy it as much as the kids!” Mannix’s show is rated “H” for hilarious and has been called the “best magic show for kids in Los Angeles!” His celebrity clients have included Angelina Jolie, Hilary Swank, Roseanne Cash and Kate Jackson.

We even made in the local paper. Here is Stefani Dias’ article in the Bakersfield Californian about our show:

For some, the bonds of friendship can feel a bit magical. That is certainly the case for the Three Amigos of Magic, who return to the Stars stage Saturday for a performance of illusions and laughs.

Mark Price, aka Gus Flamingo, will team with longtime pals and fellow entertainers Tim Mannix and Paul Gross for the family-friendly extravaganza. The trio performed at the Chester Avenue theater last October.

“Rabbits, birds, floating girls — more magic in the first 30 minutes than you would see in an average everyday magic show,” Price said of last year’s performance.

More magic than you can shake a stick at...

More magic than you can shake a stick at…

Gross is the owner of the Internet-based Hocus Pocus store, one of the most respected online magic retailers in the world and recipient of the Hollywood Magic Castle Award of Merit. With the aid of “dipsy girl assistant” Linda Davis, he will perform illusions from a bygone era, including a Hindu sword basket and aerial dove catch.

Mannix, a longtime performer at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, exudes boy-next-door charm in producing a parade of tricks and gags in an unbelievably funny manner with the aid of tricky rabbit Max Factor.

As Flamingo, Price has performed his comedy magic act in “every conceivable venue over the years,” most recently at Gus’ Garage in northwest Bakersfield.

Long Weekend, Now Back to the Castle

Posted in Uncategorized on September 11, 2015 by hocuspoc

Hope you had a pleasant Labor Day!

Generally, Labor Day marks the end of summer and the beginning of cooler days ahead. And brother are we ever glad at the prospect of cooling off! The summer heat plus the California wild fires have made for some wonderful sunsets, but the air quality is LESS than ideal, especially for those with allergy conditions.

We didn’t post a blog last week since we took a long 4-day weekend to enjoy some much needed family-time at the beach. Betty rented a beachfront house in Monterey and the kids and the grandkids all came for a relaxing respite.

I’m a lucky man. I celebrated by 60th birthday at a rented beach house in beautiful Monterey, surrounded by loved ones. It doesn’t get better than that. Thanks to all who called and sent well wishes via Facebook and email.

Here are a few pictures snapped over the weekend.

There’s always something to buy and seeing and visiting with friends is always fun, so look for us.

3 Amigos of Magic

It is now upon us. Next weekend we are back at Stars Dinner Theater for a repeat performance of the 3 Amigos of Magic. This time we’ve been asked to perform not one, but TWO shows, Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th. The 3 Amigos of Magic include myself, Tim Mannix and Mark Price.

One is smooth and polished with smart patter and the cutest bunny is the world. And the other is Gus Flamingo. Two shows at Stars Theatre Restaurant – the coolest stage in beautiful Bakersfield Sept 19th at 7:30 pm and Sept 20th at 2:00 pm.

Million Dollar Act Plays Gus’ Garage

Posted in Uncategorized on August 28, 2015 by hocuspoc

Our big appearance billed at Gus’ Garage on Mosasco in Bakersfield was a hit. We were billed as the Million Dollar Magic Act and our audience was extremely receptive and very responsive to our comedy & shenanigans.

Our friend Mark Price, aka Gus Flamingo, emceed the event and we couldn’t have asked for a more accommodating host. During the second half of the show, my grandson Zachary got a chance to get into the act when Gus pulled him up onstage to assist with his egg bag routine. It’s always fun to watch Mark work.

The lovely and talented Linda Davis, my trusted assistant always has my back and is so very funny. I’m extremely lucky to have her working with me. She’s practically a scene-stealer. Our rehearsal and fine-tuning of our act really paid off. Although, I’ll admit, we did have one minor mishap. But we played it off to laughter with the audience never knowing it wasn’t part of the show.

As usual there was great support from the local theatrical community and Mark’s social media push got additional new audience members in attendance.

Laurie, Mark’s wife, took lots of pictures during the show. Thanks Laurie. And, a longtime loyal customer, Bob Meigs, drove over 4 hours to come see the show. Thanks Bob!

Since pictures are worth a thousand words, I tell you the story of our evening in photographs.
